The 6x6mm Waterproof Sealed Tactile Switch is the rugged version of the industry-standard 6mm switch. Engineered with an internal silicon membrane and protective film, this switch is designed to operate reliably in environments where moisture, dust, and liquid splashes are present.
Specifically rated at IP67, these switches are “dust-tight” and can withstand immersion in water up to 1 meter for 30 minutes, making them the gold standard for outdoor electronics and industrial equipment.

Why the “Sealed” Design is Critical
-
Washable PCB Assembly: Standard switches can be damaged by the harsh chemicals and high-pressure sprays used during the PCB cleaning process (to remove solder flux). Sealed switches are washable, allowing for easier manufacturing without the risk of internal corrosion.
-
Corrosion Resistance: The internal metal dome is protected from humidity and oxidation. This ensures that the contact resistance remains low even after years of use in damp environments.
-
Anti-Stick Plunger: Dust and grime are the primary causes of switch failure (where the button gets “stuck” down). The sealed top prevents particulate matter from entering the housing, maintaining a consistent “snap” every time.
-
Mechanical Stability: The 4-pin through-hole design provides excellent “anchor” strength, preventing the switch from lifting off the board even when pressed by users wearing heavy work gloves.
Internal Construction
The waterproof variant typically adds a silicone rubber shield between the plunger and the internal metal dome.
-
SPST-NO Configuration: Single Pole, Single Throw, Normally Open.
-
Terminal Integrity: The pins are usually gold or silver-plated phosphor bronze, often featuring an epoxy seal at the base of the terminal to prevent “wicking” of fluids up into the switch body during soldering.
Common Applications
-
Outdoor Equipment: Smart irrigation controllers, weather stations, and gate openers.
-
Kitchen Appliances: Coffee makers, blenders, and dishwashers where steam and spills are common.
-
Industrial Controls: Handheld diagnostic tools and heavy machinery panels used in dusty factories.
-
Marine Electronics: Boat dashboard accessories and fish-finders.
-
Medical Devices: Equipment that requires frequent sanitation with liquid wipes.
Design Considerations
Height Matters: Because of the added internal seal, waterproof switches are not available in “ultra-slim” profiles. They typically start at a height of 5.0mm and go up to 10mm+.
Ventilation: If your enclosure is airtight, the “pop” of the waterproof switch can sometimes be affected by internal air pressure changes. Ensure your casing has a tiny pressure-relief vent (or a Gore-tex patch) for optimal tactile feel.
